Magnitude 5.7 earthquake felt in Martinique, tremors reported in Guadeloupe

A strong earthquake measuring magnitude 5.7 struck off the coast of Martinique on Friday afternoon, according to regional seismic monitoring authorities. The quake occurred at 5:48 p.m. local time and was widely felt across the island, prompting numerous reactions on social media and in local media outlets.

The epicenter was located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 59 kilometers northeast of the town of Trinité, at a depth of about 32 kilometers. Seismologists explained that the event originated near the boundary between the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate, a zone known for frequent seismic activity due to the slow convergence of the two tectonic plates.

Although the shaking was described by residents as intense, emergency services reported no calls related to injuries or damage. Testimonies collected by seismic agencies indicated that the tremors were also felt in neighboring Guadeloupe, underscoring the regional reach of the event.

The French Caribbean islands are among the most seismically active territories under French administration. Experts regularly remind residents of the importance of preparedness, as similar earthquakes have occurred in the region in recent years.
