Rabat shines as Morocco’s top destination for 2026

Once overshadowed by Morocco’s flashier cities, Rabat, the nation’s coastal capital, is stepping into the global spotlight. National Geographic has named 2026 the year to explore this laid-back yet culturally vibrant city.

With a surge of luxury hotel openings and striking architecture, Rabat is positioning itself as a must-visit destination. Unlike the bustling streets of Casablanca, the city moves at its own pace: calm, breezy, and endlessly inviting.

Visitors can wander the blue-and-white alleys of the Kasbah des Oudaias, enjoy mint tea overlooking the Atlantic, or stroll through the serene Andalusian Gardens. Rabat’s relaxed atmosphere offers travelers a chance to slow down and absorb the essence of Morocco.

History is woven into every corner of the city, from the ancient ruins of Chellah to the imposing Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. At the same time, modern landmarks like the late Zaha Hadid’s Grand Theatre of Rabat, inspired by the flowing Bouregreg River, and the towering Mohammed VI Tower, Africa’s tallest building, signal a forward-looking, creative future.

Rabat’s hospitality scene is thriving. The Waldorf Astoria Rabat Salé provides five-star luxury, while the Four Seasons, set in a restored 18th-century sultan’s summer palace, blends history with elegance. By 2026, the Hilton Rabat will further enhance the city’s tourism offerings.

Adding to its appeal, Rabat has been designated UNESCO World Book Capital for 2026, recognizing its rich literary culture. The city’s cultural calendar is equally compelling, featuring vibrant events like the Jidar Street Art Festival and the Mawazine Music Festival.

From navigating the old medina’s bustling souks to sampling Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine at Dar Zaki and Marea, or unwinding in the rooftop hammam at Euphoriad, Rabat offers sophistication without stress.

Spring and fall are ideal for visiting, with warm sunshine and lighter crowds, while summer hosts lively music festivals and beach activities, and winter offers a quieter, cooler charm.
