Whirlpool shares plunge after weak revenue and dividend suspension
Shares of Whirlpool Corporation fell sharply on Thursday, reaching their lowest level in more than 14 years, after the company reported weaker-than-expected first-quarter revenue and announced the suspension of its dividend.
The decline reflects growing pressure on consumer-facing industries as households reduce spending in response to persistent inflation and rising living costs. Higher energy prices, partly driven by global geopolitical tensions, have further strained household budgets and weakened consumer confidence in key markets.
Company executives noted that shifts in global economic conditions, combined with uncertainty in energy markets, have contributed to a more cautious outlook among consumers. This trend has particularly affected demand for durable goods such as household appliances, which are often delayed during periods of financial stress.
During a conference call with analysts, Whirlpool’s chief executive stated that declining consumer sentiment in the United States has reached historically low levels, reflecting widespread concern about the cost of living and economic stability.
In addition to weaker revenue performance, the company revised its full-year profit forecast downward, signaling continued challenges ahead. The updated outlook suggests a significant reduction compared with previous expectations, highlighting the impact of both macroeconomic pressures and shifting consumer behavior.
Market reaction was swift, with shares falling nearly 13% in early trading. Financial analysts point to the combination of reduced demand, margin pressure, and rising costs as key factors weighing on the company’s valuation.
Despite maintaining a relatively stable debt structure, Whirlpool now faces increased scrutiny from investors as it navigates a challenging environment for the global home appliance industry.
