Lyon’s famous flea market enters financial protection procedure
One of the best-known flea markets in France, the Les Puces du Canal near Lyon, has entered a financial protection procedure after facing growing economic pressure linked to higher property taxes.
Located in Villeurbanne since 1995 along the banks of the Jonage Canal, the market is considered the second-largest flea market in France after the famous Saint-Ouen market near Paris. Every year, it attracts around 500,000 visitors, including collectors, antique dealers, tourists, and bargain hunters.
According to local reports, the Commercial Court of Lyon approved the safeguard procedure at the request of the market’s owner. The legal measure is designed to help businesses facing financial difficulties while allowing them to continue operating and reorganize their finances.
The financial problems reportedly intensified after tax authorities reassessed the site’s property tax calculations. Officials reviewed the distribution and use of commercial spaces within the market area and concluded that the previous taxation model no longer reflected the site’s current activities.
As a result, the taxable value of the property increased significantly, leading not only to higher future taxes but also to additional payments linked to previous fiscal years. The rise also affected the business property contribution paid by the company, creating further financial strain.
The owner of the market has challenged the new tax assessment, arguing that the recalculation places excessive pressure on a cultural and commercial institution that plays an important role in the regional economy.
Despite the difficulties, traders and visitors hope the market will continue its activities. The flea market is known not only for antiques and vintage objects but also for supporting independent merchants and preserving local commercial traditions.
Local observers note that many traditional markets across Europe are facing increasing financial and administrative challenges, especially in large urban areas where property values and operational costs continue to rise.
