Interpol operation leads to nearly 270 arrests in global medicine trafficking crackdown

Nearly 270 people suspected of involvement in illegal medicine trafficking have been arrested in a large-scale international operation coordinated across 90 countries, according to Interpol.

The operation, known as “Pangea XVIII,” was carried out in March across all continents and resulted in the dismantling of 66 criminal groups. Authorities also seized more than 6 million illegal pharmaceutical products, with an estimated value of 15.5 million dollars.

The intercepted medicines included counterfeit or unapproved treatments for erectile dysfunction, sedatives, painkillers, antibiotics, and products intended to help people quit smoking. Interpol has expressed growing concern over the misuse and illegal distribution of antiparasitic drugs as well.

The global police organization warned that criminal networks are increasingly exploiting online marketplaces and informal supply chains to bypass regulatory controls. This allows them to target consumers seeking quick or affordable medical solutions, often without proper medical supervision.

Interpol Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza stressed that such illegal activities can have serious, even fatal, consequences for public health. He emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation to combat the growing threat of pharmaceutical crime and protect consumers worldwide.

Experts highlight that the rise of digital commerce has significantly increased the complexity of tracking illegal drug distribution networks, making international enforcement operations more essential than ever.
