Putin condemns Khamenei killing as cynical violation of international law
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and members of his family as a “cynical” act that violates human morality and international law. The remarks came following airstrikes reportedly carried out by Israel and the United States over Tehran on Saturday.
In a formal note to Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, released by the Kremlin, Putin expressed his “deep condolences” over the attack, emphasizing the gravity of the incident. He highlighted Khamenei’s legacy, noting his significant role in fostering strong Russian-Iranian relations and elevating them to a strategic partnership.
“In our country, Ayatollah Khamenei will be remembered as an outstanding statesman who contributed personally to the development of comprehensive ties between Russia and Iran,” Putin stated. He also requested that his sympathy and support be conveyed to Khamenei’s family, the Iranian government, and the people of Iran.
The killing has raised global concerns over regional stability, prompting diplomatic responses and calls for restraint amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Analysts warn that such events may further complicate international efforts to maintain security and peace in the region.
