Prospects for Morocco-Oman cooperation in the fisheries sector

On Thursday, in Rabat, a meeting took place between the Moroccan Secretary of State for Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, Zakia Driouich, and the Ambassador of Oman to Morocco, Khalid Ben Salem Bamkhalif. The discussion focused on the future of cooperation in the fisheries sector.

Zakia Driouich highlighted the strong relationship between Morocco and Oman, which is guided by the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Sultan Haitham ben Tariq Al Said. She emphasized Morocco’s commitment to deepening the bonds of friendship and cooperation with Oman.

During the talks, Driouich reiterated the shared ambitions of both nations to develop significant projects in the maritime fishing industry, particularly in areas where Morocco offers considerable potential, such as marine resources.

Key topics discussed included enhancing technical and scientific cooperation through exchanges on sustainable fisheries management, oceanographic research, and modern maritime surveillance technologies. Both parties also emphasized the importance of aquaculture development through training programs and capacity exchanges in sustainable aquaculture practices.

Additionally, the conversation addressed the need to promote investments, especially in port infrastructure and seafood processing, as well as increasing trade in fishery products. To strengthen cultural ties, both sides agreed to organize joint cultural events and establish educational partnerships in the maritime fisheries sector.

Oman confirmed its participation in the 7th Halieutis Exhibition in 2025, invited by the Moroccan Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries. This event will provide an excellent opportunity to further bolster bilateral relations and explore new avenues for cooperation in the fisheries sector.
