Police once again halt Dieudonné’s performance in northern France
A performance by the controversial French comedian Dieudonné M’bala M’bala was once again interrupted by police on Friday evening in Hérin (Nord), following a prefectural order banning the show. The information was first reported by La Voix du Nord and confirmed by AFP.
The comedian, known for multiple convictions related to hate speech and antisemitic remarks, was performing outdoors on the grounds of the Bonne Bière brewery.
According to the brewery’s director, André Sauvenière, “He started his show around 7 p.m., and police intervened at 7:45 p.m. to stop the performance, which he did.” He added, “We agreed it wouldn’t be a controversial show, and he was only doing old sketches. I don’t understand the authorities’ reaction.”
The Nord prefecture confirmed that the police were enforcing the ban issued on October 9. The administrative court in Lille upheld the order, citing Dieudonné’s repeated use of “serious, offensive, antisemitic, defamatory, and conspiratorial statements” during his shows, which are deemed likely to disturb public order.
Authorities also highlighted that such statements could contribute “to the radicalization of certain groups,” particularly amid a rise in antisemitic acts following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
On social media platform X, Dieudonné reacted by saying: “Another on-stage arrest yesterday near Valenciennes — I was informed of a general ban on all forms of expression in the Nord department.”
In July, one of his shows had already been stopped in Lestrem (Pas-de-Calais) under a similar prefectural order.
