Spain: Heavy Rains Injure Seven and Lead to Evacuation of a Campsite in Catalonia
Torrential rains struck northeastern Spain from Friday night to Saturday. Catalonia was particularly affected, with flooding, collapses, and the evacuation of nearly 300 people from a campsite in Roda de Berà. Emergency services have increased their interventions in response to submerged roads and coastal areas.
A particularly intense weather episode hit the Catalan coast on the night of August 21 to 22. In Roda de Berà, a municipality located southwest of Barcelona, heavy rainfall caused several accidents and forced authorities to evacuate a campsite.
At least seven people were injured in various incidents related to the severe weather. Three of them were hurt after a wall collapsed in the port of the municipality. One of the victims may have sustained serious injuries.
At a nearby campsite, the collapse of another wall resulted in two additional injuries, both of whom were slightly hurt.
Nearly 300 Evacuated
In light of rising waters and risks associated with weakened infrastructure, emergency services evacuated approximately 300 people present at the campsite.
About a hundred of them were temporarily housed in a municipal gymnasium, while safety operations continued on site.
Emergency services carried out over 200 interventions during the episode. Several operations were specifically aimed at motorists trapped on flooded roads.
Catalan Coast Particularly Affected
The heavy rainfall also caused significant flooding in several areas of the Catalan coast.
In El Vendrell, water covered the seafront by several centimeters. The recorded rainfall amounts testify to the severity of the episode: some areas received more than 100 liters of water per square meter, while totals approached 200 liters per square meter in just a few hours in certain coastal zones.
These concentrated rains over a short period quickly saturated drainage systems and favored runoff, complicating travel and emergency interventions.
A Brutal Episode Following Weeks of Heat
The severity of this weather event occurs in a particular meteorological context. Like much of Spain, Catalonia has experienced a summer marked by high temperatures and several heatwaves.
The alternation between very hot periods and episodes of extremely intense rainfall poses an increasing challenge for Mediterranean regions. Soils, infrastructure, and urban networks must cope with weather phenomena that can be very rapid and difficult to anticipate locally.
Spain is among the European countries particularly exposed to the consequences of climate change, with a rise in extreme heat episodes and risks associated with intense weather phenomena.
Authorities Remain Mobilized
After the flooding, rescue teams continue cleaning, securing, and assessing damage in the affected areas.
In Roda de Berà, the priority remains the care of evacuees and verifying the stability of damaged buildings and infrastructure.
This episode once again highlights the vulnerability of certain Spanish coastal areas to intense rainfall, especially when significant volumes of water are discharged in just a few hours.
