Morocco seeks key role at global maritime assembly in London

Morocco has joined global maritime leaders at the 34th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which commenced today in London. The high-level meeting brings together representatives from member states to shape the future of the maritime sector, a critical element of the global economy.

Leading the Moroccan delegation is Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh, accompanied by Morocco’s ambassador to the UK, Hakim Hajoui, alongside senior officials from key maritime and logistics institutions. The delegation aims to secure a seat in Category C of the IMO Council, the executive body responsible for overseeing the organization’s work.

During the session, participants are set to discuss strategic priorities, adopt resolutions, and elect the new IMO Council. They will also examine a revised text of the IMO Convention, propose updates to internal regulations, and discuss partnerships with non-governmental organizations. Further, the assembly will vote on the gradual implementation of Arabic as a working language to enhance the organization’s linguistic diversity.

The assembly will also focus on the 2024-2029 strategic plan, which outlines goals for maritime safety, environmental protection, technological innovation, and capacity building. Budgetary discussions for the 2026-2027 period will address challenges posed by the energy transition and the digitalization of global supply chains.

Morocco’s participation reflects its commitment to enhancing the maritime sector’s global governance. The delegation includes representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries, the National Ports Agency, and the Tanger-Med Port Authority.
