Indonesia records simultaneous activity at six active volcanoes

Indonesia is witnessing an unusual period of volcanic activity, with six active volcanoes erupting or showing significant eruptive activity simultaneously in different parts of the archipelago, according to official data.

The phenomenon has been monitored by Indonesian authorities since August 31, highlighting the country’s exposure to volcanic hazards due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active geological zones.

The volcanoes currently showing activity are Anak Krakatau, Mount Semeru, Mount Ibu, Lewotobi Laki-Laki, Lewotolok and Mount Sinabung. Their activity is being closely monitored by Indonesia’s geological authorities as officials assess potential risks to nearby communities and transportation networks.

Despite the simultaneous eruptions, Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has stressed that the six volcanic events are not directly connected. According to the agency, each volcano has its own independent magma system, meaning that the concurrent activity does not indicate a single geological process triggering all six eruptions.

Recent activity has included an ash column from Mount Semeru that rose approximately 1,000 meters above the volcano on Sunday. Anak Krakatau has also continued to display notable volcanic activity, prompting authorities to maintain close surveillance of the area.

Indonesia operates a four-level volcanic alert system. Five of the six volcanoes — Anak Krakatau, Semeru, Ibu, Lewotobi Laki-Laki and Sinabung — have been placed at alert level three, indicating a heightened level of volcanic activity and the need for increased precautions. Lewotolok remains at level two.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity, volcanic emissions and changes in the behavior of the volcanoes. Residents and visitors in potentially affected areas are being urged to follow official safety instructions and respect exclusion zones established around the active volcanoes.

The simultaneous activity underscores the scale of Indonesia’s volcanic challenge, with hundreds of volcanoes spread across the archipelago and a significant number considered active. While the six eruptions are not believed to be causally linked, their occurrence at the same time represents a notable period of volcanic activity requiring sustained monitoring.
