Morocco nears $600 million deal for Embraer KC-390 military aircraft
Morocco is close to securing a $600 million agreement with Brazilian aerospace company Embraer to acquire KC-390 Millennium military transport planes, marking a significant step in modernizing its air force. The deal, expected to include four to five aircraft, signals Morocco's intent to replace its aging fleet of C-130H planes, which have diminished in performance due to advanced age.
The KC-390 Millennium is a twin-engine, jet-powered transport aircraft renowned for its versatility, speed, and cost efficiency. Capable of carrying up to 26 tonnes of cargo, the aircraft can reach speeds of 987.8 kilometers per hour and operate at altitudes of 10,973 meters. Its range of 2,590 kilometers extends further in ferry configurations, making it ideal for military, humanitarian, and supply missions.
Competing interests in Morocco’s defense market
American defense company Lockheed Martin is also vying for Morocco’s military contracts. The company, through L3Harris Technologies, is engaged in modernizing Morocco’s existing fleet of C-130 aircraft. This upgrade program, running from 2025 to 2029, aims to enhance systems and engines, ensuring the C-130 fleet remains operational and competitive.
The competition underscores Morocco's strategic importance in North Africa and reflects the growing rivalry between American and Brazilian defense contractors in the region.
Strengthening defense partnerships
As Morocco boosts its defense budget—reaching $13 billion in 2024—the country is diversifying its military partnerships. In addition to its collaboration with Embraer, Morocco and Brazil have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an integrated aviation center worth $1 billion, expected to create 1,000 jobs by 2035.
Morocco has also expanded its arsenal through deals with other global partners. Earlier this year, it acquired Chinese-made TB-001K “Scorpion” drones and Turkish Bayraktar Akinci drones for surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Furthermore, the US approved Morocco’s purchase of 612 Javelin missiles and 200 launch units for $260 million, further strengthening its defense capabilities.
Regional focus on military modernization
Morocco’s efforts to modernize its military come amid rising regional tensions, particularly with the Algeria-backed Polisario Front. By diversifying its defense suppliers and adopting advanced technologies, Morocco aims to enhance its defensive capabilities and maintain strategic readiness in North Africa.
