Morocco mourns the death of Said Jedidi, pioneer of Spanish-language journalism
Rabat – The Moroccan media world is in mourning after the passing of journalist and writer Said Jedidi on Saturday evening. Considered one of the founders of Spanish-language journalism in Morocco after independence, Jedidi leaves behind a remarkable legacy that bridged cultures and languages.
Born and educated in Tétouan, Jedidi later pursued his university studies in England and Spain. He went on to join the Spanish section of RTM, where he served as editor-in-chief and later as head of department.
His voice became familiar to Moroccan listeners when he covered historic moments, including the Green March. Fluent in Spanish, he also worked as a correspondent for major international outlets such as El País (Spain), Televisa-Galavisión (Mexico), and Inforred.
Jedidi’s contributions extended beyond broadcasting. He founded L’Opinion Semanal and La Mañana, created the blog Con Acento Marroquí, and directed the digital platform Info Marruecos. As a lecturer, he participated in conferences at universities in Morocco and abroad, often highlighting cultural ties with the Spanish-speaking world.
Alongside journalism, Jedidi was also a prolific Spanish-language writer, with works such as Yamna and Grito primae, which are archived in several academic institutions.
In recognition of his role in promoting Spanish-language media in Morocco, Jedidi was decorated with the Spanish Order of Merit. His passing marks the end of an era for Moroccan journalism, but his influence will remain deeply rooted in the country’s cultural and media landscape.
