Morocco lowers medication prices to ease access to critical treatments
Morocco's Ministry of Health and Social Protection has announced significant price reductions on medications, including treatments for chronic illnesses and cancer, as part of its broader strategy to enhance the nation’s healthcare system.
The decision, which impacts original, generic, and biosimilar drugs, aims to improve access to life-saving treatments for patients battling severe illnesses. Pharmaceutical companies submitted price adjustment requests, which were carefully reviewed by regulators before approval.
Among the medications benefiting from these reductions is AFINITOR 5mg, a cancer treatment drug, whose price was lowered from MAD 16,280 (1,630)toMAD11,832(1,630) to MAD 11,832 (1,630)toMAD11,832(1,185) for a box of 30 tablets. Similarly, Cefico 200mg, an antibiotic, saw its price drop from MAD 91.50 (9.15)toMAD88.90(9.15) to MAD 88.90 (9.15)toMAD88.90(8.90) for a box of eight tablets.
This initiative is part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to reduce the economic burden on patients requiring long-term medical care. Health Minister Amine Tahraoui recently announced that the prices of 190 medications for chronic diseases would be reduced in the near future. This follows a series of similar measures, including a price drop for 169 drugs earlier this year. Since 2021, the government has reduced the prices of over 5,350 medications.
Despite these reforms, Minister Tahraoui acknowledged during a parliamentary session that pharmaceutical costs remain a contentious issue. The government’s recent moves to regulate drug prices are intended to alleviate financial pressure on patients and ensure essential medicines are more affordable.
This initiative underscores Morocco’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare system and improving the accessibility of critical treatments for its citizens.
