India's fuel retailers reaffirm E20 petrol quality after nationwide testing
India's three largest state-owned fuel retailers have defended the quality of E20 petrol, stating that extensive nationwide testing found no evidence of contamination concerns raised in recent public discussions.
In a joint statement released on Friday, the companies said the fuel continues to comply with national quality specifications, reinforcing confidence in India's expanding ethanol-blending program.
Extensive testing supports compliance
The review covered fuel samples collected from refineries and ethanol production facilities across the country.
According to the companies, laboratory analysis found chloride concentrations in petrol remained at or below the prescribed threshold, while ethanol supplied by dozens of distilleries also met required standards.
The findings, they said, provide no indication of excessive chloride contamination or abnormal moisture levels that could affect fuel performance or vehicle reliability.
Ethanol blending remains a national priority
India has accelerated the rollout of E20 fuel, a blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% gasoline, as part of its broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil and expand the use of domestically produced biofuels.
The initiative is expected to lower carbon emissions, support the agricultural sector through increased ethanol production and strengthen the country's long-term energy security.
As E20 becomes more widely available, fuel quality has become a central issue for motorists, vehicle manufacturers and regulators.
Industry seeks to reassure consumers
The statement from the country's leading fuel retailers aims to address concerns over the consistency and safety of higher ethanol blends.
The companies emphasized that continuous quality monitoring is carried out throughout the production and distribution chain to ensure compliance with technical standards before fuel reaches retail stations.
Maintaining consumer confidence is considered essential as the government continues expanding ethanol blending targets across the national fuel network.
Transition toward cleaner fuels
The confirmation comes as India continues investing in alternative and lower-carbon transportation fuels alongside broader efforts to modernize its energy sector.
Industry analysts note that successful implementation of higher ethanol blends will depend not only on production capacity but also on rigorous quality assurance, infrastructure upgrades and public confidence in the performance of the new fuel.
The latest testing results are expected to support the continued rollout of E20 petrol as India advances its long-term clean energy and fuel diversification strategy.
