Turkey aims to complete Akkuyu nuclear power plant by 2030
Turkey has reaffirmed its ambition to bring all four reactors of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant into operation by 2030, marking a major milestone in the country's long-term strategy to diversify its energy mix and strengthen energy security.
Turkish officials stated that testing of the plant's first reactor is progressing, with the goal of beginning electricity generation once all technical and regulatory requirements have been completed. The remaining three units are expected to enter service gradually over the following years, with full commercial operation targeted before the end of the decade.
Located on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is the country's first nuclear energy facility. The project is being developed in cooperation with Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom under a build-own-operate model, in which the developer is responsible for construction, ownership, and operation of the plant.
When completed, the facility will consist of four VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactors, each capable of producing approximately 1,200 megawatts of electricity. Combined, the plant is expected to generate a significant share of Turkey's electricity demand while helping reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Energy officials have emphasized that operational experience gained from the first reactor will support the commissioning and efficient management of the remaining units. This phased approach is intended to improve safety, operational performance, and long-term reliability.
Turkey has expanded its investment in energy infrastructure in recent years, increasing the share of renewable energy while also pursuing nuclear power as part of a balanced energy strategy. The government considers nuclear energy an important component of its efforts to ensure stable electricity supplies, meet growing domestic demand, and lower carbon emissions.
The Akkuyu project represents one of the largest energy investments in Turkey's history and is expected to contribute to economic development through job creation, technology transfer, and the development of a skilled workforce in the nuclear sector.
As global demand for reliable and low-carbon energy continues to rise, Turkey views nuclear power as a key element of its future energy policy, supporting both economic growth and long-term energy independence.
