Russia–China Trade Surges in First Seven Months of 2026 Despite Global Challenges

Trade between Russia and China recorded strong growth during the first seven months of 2026, highlighting the continued expansion of economic cooperation between the two countries despite ongoing geopolitical and global economic challenges.

According to official Chinese customs data, bilateral trade reached approximately $159.2 billion between January and July 2026, representing a 26.3% increase compared with the same period in 2025. The figures reflect sustained demand for energy, industrial goods, machinery, and consumer products, reinforcing the strategic economic partnership between Beijing and Moscow.

China's imports from Russia totaled more than $86 billion, driven largely by energy resources and raw materials, while Chinese exports to Russia exceeded $72 billion, supported by shipments of machinery, electronics, vehicles, and manufactured goods. The continued diversification of trade has helped strengthen commercial ties between the two economies.

In July alone, bilateral trade surpassed $25 billion, demonstrating consistent monthly momentum. Analysts note that both countries have continued to deepen cooperation through long-term trade agreements, investment initiatives, and greater use of national currencies in cross-border transactions.

The latest figures also show that trade between China and the United States increased modestly during the same period, reaching nearly $345 billion, indicating that China continues to maintain significant commercial relationships with multiple major global partners despite shifting geopolitical dynamics.

Economists believe that the expansion of Russia–China trade reflects broader efforts by both nations to strengthen economic resilience, secure supply chains, and reduce vulnerability to external market uncertainties. Continued cooperation in energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, and technology is expected to remain a key feature of the bilateral relationship in the coming years.
