Morocco Enhances Military Capabilities with Advanced US Rocket Systems

Morocco is poised to make history as the first North African nation to acquire the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) from the United States. This groundbreaking development, reported by defenceWeb, marks a significant milestone in the country's military modernization efforts.

The procurement process has gained momentum with Lockheed Martin recently securing a $226 million contract to manufacture these sophisticated systems. This follows the US government's approval in April 2023 for the sale of 18 M142 HIMARS launchers and associated equipment to Morocco, in a deal valued at $524 million.

Morocco's military shopping list includes an impressive array of firepower: 40 M57 ATACMS rounds, 36 M31A2 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) Unitary rounds, and 36 M30A2 GMLRS Alternative Warhead rounds. The ATACMS, a short-range ballistic missile, boasts a striking range of up to 300 km. Meanwhile, the GMLRS Unitary and Alternative Warhead rounds can reach targets over 70 km away, each carrying a formidable 100 kg warhead.

The versatility of the HIMARS system is noteworthy, with each vehicle capable of carrying either six GMLRS rockets or a single ATACMS missile. This flexibility allows for adaptable mission profiles and enhanced strategic capabilities.

On July 2, the US Department of Defence announced Lockheed Martin's contract to produce ATACMS not only for Morocco but also for Estonia, Latvia, and Poland. The project is slated for completion by December 2028, signaling a long-term commitment to bolstering allied nations' defense capabilities.

Upon delivery, Morocco will join an exclusive club in the region, alongside Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, as operators of the HIMARS system. This acquisition is expected to significantly enhance Morocco's long-range strike capabilities and improve interoperability with US forces.

The HIMARS will complement Morocco's existing arsenal of multiple rocket launchers, which includes the Chinese-made WS-2D and PHL-03 (AR-2) systems. The WS-2D, with its impressive 400 km range and 200 kg warhead capacity, and the PHL-03, a 300 mm multiple rocket launcher acquired over a decade ago, form a formidable backbone of Morocco's artillery forces.

The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency has emphasized the strategic importance of this sale, stating that it "will improve Morocco's capability to meet current and future threats and will contribute to Morocco's ability to detect threats and control its borders, contributing to the maintenance of regional stability and security."

As a Major Non-NATO Ally, Morocco's role in maintaining political stability and fostering economic progress in North Africa has been recognized by the US government. This latest military acquisition further cements Morocco's position as a key player in regional security dynamics.

The introduction of HIMARS and ATACMS into Morocco's military arsenal represents a significant leap forward in the country's defense capabilities. As geopolitical landscapes continue to evolve, this strategic move positions Morocco at the forefront of military technology in North Africa, potentially reshaping regional power dynamics in the years to come.
