Marseille: Five regional TER lines opened to competition awarded to SNCF
The French national railway company SNCF has officially won the contract for the operation of five regional TER lines around Marseille and the Hautes-Alpes, following a vote by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Councilthis Friday.
The company was competing against Transdev, which already operates the Marseille–Nice line since June. According to regional president Renaud Muselier, the SNCF submitted an “unbeatable offer,” winning four of the five evaluation criteria and tying on the fifth.
The public service delegation contract, valued at €2.25 billion, includes €1.8 billion for operations, €328 million for the purchase of 25 new trains, and €48 million for the renovation of maintenance centers in Marseille-Blancarde and Briançon. The new services are expected to begin in December 2029 and last for ten years.
Muselier assured that this agreement would bring “30% more trains” and “30% lower fares” for passengers.
This marks another step in the gradual opening of the French regional rail network to competition. Last June, Transdev became the first private operator to manage a regional line between Marseille and Nice, signaling the beginning of a new era in French rail transport.
