Spanish NGO sailing mission delivers humanitarian aid to Cuba
A humanitarian sailing mission organized by Spanish NGO Open Arms has reached Cuba, delivering critical medical assistance and renewable energy equipment to a pediatric hospital in Havana amid ongoing challenges affecting the island's healthcare system.
The NGO's sailing vessel, El Astral, arrived at the Port of Havana on Sunday after a transatlantic journey that began in Barcelona in early May. During its voyage, the ship made several stops in Spain and Mexico before reaching the Cuban capital with a cargo of humanitarian supplies.
Medical equipment and solar panels for children's hospital
The shipment includes medicines, medical equipment and solar panels intended for the intensive care unit of the Juan Manuel Márquez Pediatric Hospital in Havana. The delivery is designed to strengthen the hospital's ability to maintain essential medical services, particularly during periods of energy instability.
The arrival comes as Cuba continues to face recurring electricity shortages that have placed additional pressure on hospitals and other critical public services.
Humanitarian appeal beyond a single mission
Open Arms founder Oscar Camps used the vessel's arrival to call for broader international humanitarian engagement with Cuba. He argued that healthcare facilities should not be placed at risk because of geopolitical disputes and emphasized the importance of ensuring uninterrupted access to essential medical services.
Camps also expressed hope that the transatlantic voyage would encourage other humanitarian organizations to undertake similar initiatives, describing the mission as a starting point rather than an isolated effort.
A vessel with a history of humanitarian operations
El Astral has previously participated in humanitarian missions in the Mediterranean Sea, where it supported migrant rescue operations, and has also been involved in aid initiatives linked to Gaza.
Its latest deployment underscores the expanding role of non-governmental organizations in providing humanitarian assistance across different regions, particularly where public infrastructure faces prolonged operational challenges.
The mission highlights how civil society organizations continue to mobilize international support for vulnerable healthcare systems by delivering both immediate medical supplies and longer-term energy solutions such as solar power.
