DR Congo repatriates citizens as anti-foreigner violence escalates in South Africa
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has repatriated the first group of its citizens from South Africa following a wave of anti-foreigner violence that has raised growing concern across the African continent.
According to Congolese authorities, 121 nationals, including women and children, arrived safely in Kinshasa as part of a voluntary repatriation operation. Officials said additional evacuation efforts could follow depending on the evolving security situation.
South Africa has experienced weeks of protests and unrest targeting undocumented migrants, prompting many foreign nationals to leave the country out of concern for their safety. The departures reportedly include citizens from several African countries, reflecting the regional impact of the violence.
As Africa's most industrialized economy, South Africa has long attracted migrant workers seeking employment opportunities. However, tensions linked to unemployment, economic inequality, and pressure on public services have periodically fueled hostility toward foreign nationals.
Episodes of xenophobic violence have occurred repeatedly since 2008, resulting in deaths, injuries, property destruction, and the displacement of thousands of migrants. Governments across the continent have consistently condemned such attacks while calling for stronger protections for migrant communities.
South African authorities have recently increased security measures and arrested dozens of individuals following demonstrations that escalated into violence and looting. Police continue to investigate the incidents while working to restore public order.
Regional leaders have urged greater cooperation to address the root causes of migration-related tensions. Several African governments have called for coordinated action aimed at protecting migrants' rights, strengthening social cohesion, and promoting peaceful coexistence across the region.
Analysts note that balancing border management, economic challenges, and humanitarian responsibilities remains one of the key policy issues facing South Africa as migration continues to shape the country's social and economic landscape.
