Major 7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes off Japan, tsunami warning issued

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for several coastal regions.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicentre of the quake was located in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres. Officials warned that tsunami waves could reach up to 3 metres in height, urging residents in affected areas to move away from the coastline immediately.

The strongest impacts are expected in the northern prefectures of Iwate Prefecture, Aomori Prefecture, and Hokkaido. Emergency services have been placed on alert as authorities monitor possible aftershocks and wave activity.
