Ben-Gvir calls for intensified targeted killings in Gaza

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for a significant escalation of targeted killings in Gaza, arguing that dozens of operations should be carried out every night.

According to reports cited by the Financial Times, Ben-Gvir made the remarks during a podcast appearance with Rom Braslavski, an Israeli who had previously been held hostage by Hamas. The far-right minister also expressed opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to scale back military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Ben-Gvir reportedly argued that Israel should carry out between 30 and 40 targeted killings each night, extending the proposed operations beyond individuals considered immediate security threats. His comments have drawn attention because of their particularly inflammatory language toward Palestinians.

The minister also reiterated his support for expanding Jewish settlements in Palestinian territories, placing his position at odds with efforts aimed at reducing tensions and advancing a political settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

His remarks come amid continued uncertainty surrounding the implementation of agreements intended to halt the fighting in Gaza. Previous arrangements have included provisions concerning a ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, increased humanitarian assistance and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces.

The situation remains highly sensitive, with disagreements over military operations, humanitarian conditions and the future governance of Gaza continuing to complicate diplomatic efforts.

Settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank is another major point of contention. Palestinians and many international actors view continued settlement activity as a significant obstacle to the creation of a viable Palestinian state and to long-term peace negotiations.

Ben-Gvir's latest statements are therefore likely to intensify debate within Israel and internationally over the country's military strategy, the protection of civilians and the prospects for a durable political solution.

The comments also highlight the divisions within Israel's political leadership over how to manage the conflict, particularly between calls for continued military pressure and efforts to consolidate ceasefire arrangements and pursue negotiations.
