Japan approves additional funding to boost advanced chip development
Japan has approved a significant new funding package to accelerate the development of advanced semiconductors, reinforcing its ambition to strengthen domestic chip production and reduce reliance on global supply chains.
The initiative includes additional financial support for Rapidus, a key player in the country’s strategy to regain competitiveness in cutting-edge chip manufacturing. The funding, amounting to nearly $4 billion, is aimed primarily at research and development efforts.
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is leading the effort, reflecting growing concerns over semiconductor supply security amid global technological competition. The move aligns with similar policies adopted by other major economies seeking to secure access to critical technologies.
The government is also working through New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to support chip design projects involving major firms such as Fujitsu and IBM Japan. These collaborations aim to enhance innovation across the semiconductor ecosystem.
Rapidus is currently focused on developing next-generation logic chips at the 2-nanometre level, a highly advanced technology expected to play a critical role in future computing, artificial intelligence, and data processing systems. The company aims to begin mass production by 2027.
The funding builds on previous public and private investments, signaling strong commitment from both the government and industry stakeholders. Analysts say such efforts are essential for Japan to remain competitive in a sector dominated by a few global players.
