Germany's domestic intelligence labels AfD as a right-wing extremist group
Germany's domestic intelligence agency has officially classified the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a right-wing extremist organization, granting authorities expanded powers to monitor its activities. This move comes just months after the AfD secured second place in national elections.
The far-right, anti-immigration party had been under investigation by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) for several years, with some local branches already labeled as extremist. The decision to extend the classification to the entire party was due to multiple instances where the AfD attempted to undermine Germany's democratic structure.
The BfV criticized the AfD for its exclusionary rhetoric, particularly against German citizens with migrant backgrounds from Muslim-majority countries. It highlighted the party's ongoing xenophobic, Islamophobic, and anti-minority statements by prominent members.
As a result of the new classification, intelligence agencies have increased surveillance capabilities, including the ability to intercept communications and deploy undercover agents.
In response, AfD member Anton Baron condemned the classification as politically motivated, lamenting the use of state resources against the leading opposition party. The AfD, which has gained significant traction by exploiting fears over immigration, secured more than 20% of the vote in the recent February elections, finishing behind the center-right CDU.
