German election shifts political landscape as CDU leads and AfD surges to second place
The Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) conservative alliance has emerged victorious in Germany's parliamentary elections, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieving a historic second-place finish. According to preliminary results from public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, the CDU/CSU secured approximately 29% of the vote.
The AfD marked a significant milestone by gaining between 19.5% and 20% of the votes, establishing itself as the country's second-largest political force for the first time since its founding. This result represents a substantial shift in Germany's political landscape.
Incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) placed third with around 16% of the votes, while the Green Party secured the fourth position with 13.5%, according to exit polls conducted by public television networks.
