France has expelled two Nigerien intelligence officers assigned to Niger’s embassy in Paris after declaring them persona non grata on September 16, according to a diplomatic source cited in reports published Friday.

The decision required both officials to leave French territory. The diplomatic source confirmed the measure, which was first reported by French newspaper Le Monde, without providing further details about the circumstances surrounding their expulsion.

Diplomatic Measure Confirmed by French Source

The two officers were serving at Niger’s diplomatic mission in the French capital when French authorities designated them persona non grata, a diplomatic term used to indicate that a host country no longer accepts the presence of a foreign diplomatic representative or official.

The source confirmed that the declaration was made on September 16 and that both individuals subsequently departed France.

No additional information was provided regarding the specific grounds for the decision, and the available account did not detail any official response from Niger’s authorities.

Bilateral Relations in Focus

The expulsion places diplomatic relations between France and Niger under renewed scrutiny, although the circumstances of this particular decision remain unclear.

The measure concerns two intelligence personnel serving within Niger’s embassy in Paris. However, the information released by the diplomatic source does not establish whether their departure was connected to a broader diplomatic dispute or to specific allegations involving either individual.

The absence of further official details leaves key questions unanswered, including the precise reasons behind the declaration and whether the move will prompt any reciprocal action by Niger.

For now, the confirmed elements remain limited to the September 16 designation and the subsequent departure of both Nigerien officers from French territory.
