United States: Eight people killed in Pennsylvania shooting, suspect found dead

A shooting in the city of Erie, northern Pennsylvania, has resulted in eight fatalities, including two young children. The suspect, a 45-year-old man, was found dead in the house where part of the incident took place. According to local authorities, he likely committed suicide after opening fire on Friday, October 9.

Police intervention after reported gunfire

Police were alerted around 5 PM on Friday after witnesses reported a man armed with a handgun firing outside a residence before entering it.

Two women, aged 51 and 37, were found dead in the street. According to Rick Lorah, the Erie police chief, the suspect also opened fire inside the home before coming back outside and shooting the two women.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement, the man barricaded himself inside the house. Gunshots were heard as police urged him to surrender.

Two children among the victims

During a press conference held on Saturday afternoon, Rick Lorah announced that six other bodies had been discovered inside the residence. Among the victims were a five-year-old boy and a girl only ten months old.

The suspect was found on the first floor of the house, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to preliminary information provided by the police.

Authorities also specified that seven of the eight victims had familial ties to the suspect or to each other, while the eighth was a family friend.

Motive remains to be determined

At this stage, investigators have not established the precise reasons for the shooting. The Erie police chief indicated that it was still too early to provide a definitive explanation, although initial findings suggest a possible family tragedy.

The exact circumstances of the events and the sequence of events still need to be clarified by the investigation.

The municipality expresses support for the affected

Present alongside the police chief during the press briefing, Erie Mayor Daria Devlin expressed her solidarity with those affected by this tragedy.

She particularly mentioned the neighbors who witnessed the scene, the families and friends of the victims, as well as the police officers and rescuers mobilized on-site. She also extended thoughts to residents struggling to comprehend the magnitude of this tragedy.

The investigation will now aim to clarify the circumstances of this shooting that has left several families in mourning and deeply affected the local community.
