Morocco Awaits CAS Verdict After Five-Hour Hearing in AFCON Title Dispute

The legal battle over the Africa Cup of Nations title claimed by Morocco has entered a decisive phase after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) concluded a hearing lasting more than five hours into Senegal’s appeal against the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) ruling.

The tribunal is now reviewing the arguments presented by both federations, with a final, reasoned decision expected within days or weeks, according to CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb. The outcome will determine whether CAF’s decision to award the continental title to Morocco remains in force or is overturned.

The case has attracted considerable attention from football supporters in both countries, as well as across Africa, given the sporting and regulatory implications of the dispute.

A Dispute Centered on the Final’s Controversial Events

The proceedings in Lausanne stem from Senegal’s challenge to a decision by the CAF Appeals Committee, which ruled in Morocco’s favour following incidents during the AFCON final between the two national teams.

At the heart of the legal dispute are questions surrounding the conduct of the match and the application of competition regulations. The Senegalese Football Federation is seeking to overturn the CAF ruling, while Morocco’s football authorities are defending the decision through the established arbitration process.

Following the hearing, Reeb acknowledged the strong interest surrounding the case and said the tribunal intended to deliver its reasoned ruling as soon as possible. However, he offered no definitive date, leaving both sides awaiting the panel’s assessment.

Moroccan Case Draws Support From Sports Commentators

Sports commentator Mohamed El Magoudi expressed confidence in the legal arguments presented by the Moroccan side during an appearance on the Meta 3 programme, broadcast by Hespress and Hesport.

He identified the departure of Senegalese players from the pitch during the final as a central element in the case, arguing that the incident should be examined in light of the regulations governing international competitions.

In his assessment, Morocco’s position rests on the principle that matches are governed not only by their sporting outcomes but also by rules defining the obligations of participating teams and the consequences of potential breaches.

El Magoudi also argued that Morocco’s recourse to the relevant sporting institutions should be viewed as a legitimate use of the regulatory framework rather than as a factor diminishing the significance of the title awarded by CAF.

His position reflects one interpretation of the case, although the final legal assessment rests exclusively with the CAS panel.

Hicham El Amrani Urges Caution Before the Ruling

A more cautious perspective was offered by former Moroccan international Hicham El Amrani, who warned against treating the existing CAF decision as the end of the dispute.

Although he acknowledged the arguments available to Morocco, El Amrani said it remained difficult to determine how the tribunal would rule after examining both parties’ submissions. He described the contest as effectively balanced, assigning each side an equal chance in his personal assessment.

He also pointed to the particular nature of the case, suggesting that the interpretation of competition rules and relevant sporting precedents could play an important role in the tribunal’s deliberations.

His comments underline the uncertainty surrounding a dispute in which the appeal process, rather than public expectations or individual predictions, will determine the final outcome.

A Decision With Major Consequences for African Football

Morocco currently benefits from the CAF Appeals Committee’s ruling, while Senegal is seeking its annulment through arbitration. Until CAS issues its final decision, the legal challenge remains unresolved.

The ruling will clarify the status of the AFCON title and bring the dispute over the final closer to a conclusion. It may also carry broader implications for how competition regulations are interpreted and enforced when disciplinary incidents arise during major international tournaments.

For supporters of both national teams, the wait continues. The next decisive step will come from the tribunal itself, whose reasoned judgment is expected to settle the dispute according to the applicable sporting rules and legal arguments.
