Portugal Suspends Cristiano Ronaldo Provisionally as Federation Investigates Camp Exit
Portugal’s football federation has launched disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo following his departure from the national team camp amid a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus, opening a new chapter in tensions surrounding the veteran forward’s international career.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced the decision on Saturday, confirming that the 41-year-old striker had been provisionally suspended while the case is examined. The federation said an automatic suspension had already taken effect before the formal disciplinary process began.
Citing the urgency of the matter, the FPF declined to provide further details, stating that it would issue no additional communication until the investigation had concluded.
Dispute over playing time triggers disciplinary action
The incident dates back to September 30, when Ronaldo reportedly left the national team camp after learning that he would not start Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark in Copenhagen the following day.
The episode followed another source of frustration for the forward, who had remained on the bench during Portugal’s encounter with Norway in Oslo. His limited involvement in the two matches became the focus of a dispute with the coaching staff.
According to Portuguese media reports, the federation’s disciplinary regulations allow suspensions ranging from one to six months for players who miss a national-team training session, match or other scheduled activity without authorization.
The final sanction, if any beyond the provisional suspension, will depend on the outcome of the proceedings.
Ronaldo apologizes but criticizes Jorge Jesus
Ronaldo addressed the controversy publicly on Wednesday, apologizing to Portuguese supporters and his teammates for the episode. He also indicated that he remained open to returning to international duty after serving whatever suspension might be imposed.
However, his statement included sharp criticism of Jesus, with whom he worked last season at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. The pair had previously won the Saudi league title together.
Ronaldo accused the coach of failing to honour commitments on two occasions. The first concerned the decision not to bring him onto the pitch against Norway. The second involved an alleged failure to follow agreed talking points intended to address the controversy during a press conference.
The proposed messaging reportedly included an acknowledgment that it had been a mistake to ask a player of Ronaldo’s stature to warm up without subsequently introducing him into the game, drawing comparisons with football legends Pelé and Diego Maradona.
Ronaldo also objected to what he described as an overly authoritarian manner of communication from the 72-year-old coach.
The competing accounts have added a public dimension to a dispute that began over team selection and playing time. The disciplinary investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s departure from the camp.
Portugal advances without its captain
Despite the controversy, Portugal’s results in the Nations League have remained strong. The national side won all four of its matches in the competition, including the three most recent games played without Ronaldo.
Those results secured Portugal’s qualification for the quarter-finals, demonstrating that the team has continued its campaign while the situation involving its most prominent player remains unresolved.
Portugal is scheduled to face Denmark at home on November 14, with Ronaldo’s availability for future international fixtures dependent on the disciplinary outcome and any suspension imposed.
An uncertain next step for Portugal’s record scorer
The proceedings place the spotlight on the relationship between Ronaldo and the national-team coaching staff at a time when Portugal is progressing in the competition.
For the federation, the immediate priority is to examine the circumstances of the player’s departure and determine the appropriate disciplinary response. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has expressed regret over the incident while maintaining his objections to the way the dispute was handled.
The eventual decision will clarify the consequences of the episode and help determine the conditions under which the veteran forward could return to the national team.
