Eid Al Adha 2025: Morocco prepares for crescent moon sighting

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has instructed regional delegates to observe the crescent moon for the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on Tuesday. This event is crucial as it determines the timing of Eid Al Adha, also known as Eid Al Kebir, which is anticipated to fall on June 7 this year.

Dhu al-Hijjah is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar, marking a significant period for Muslims worldwide. It is during this month that the Hajj pilgrimage occurs, culminating in the celebration of Eid Al Adha. This sacred event commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to God. Traditionally, the day begins with morning prayers at mosques, followed by the ritual of slaughtering sheep.

This year presents a unique challenge for Morocco. In a significant announcement made in February, King Mohammed VI declared the cancellation of the Eid Al Adha sacrifice ritual due to drought conditions and a decrease in livestock populations. The king emphasized the importance of celebrating the occasion without the sacrificial rites, stating, "Performing it under these difficult circumstances would cause real harm to many of our people, particularly those with limited incomes."

In addition to the cancellation of the sacrifice, Morocco has implemented a ban on the slaughter of female sheep and goats to further mitigate the effects of the ongoing drought crisis. This marks the fourth occurrence in which Morocco has canceled the sacrifice ritual, with previous cancellations in 1963, 1981, and 1996.

As the crescent moon sighting approaches, astronomers and officials are poised to confirm the date of Eid Al Adha. The Ministry will rely on reports from its delegates to validate whether the crescent has been sighted, ensuring that the announcement is made through official channels.

The observance of Eid Al Adha, while altered, remains a time for reflection and community, allowing Moroccans to embrace the significance of the occasion despite the challenges faced in 2025.
