Eduardo Bolsonaro sentenced to four years in prison over U.S. lobbying activities
Eduardo Bolsonaro, the third son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of attempting to influence legal proceedings in Brazil through lobbying efforts directed at authorities in the United States.
The ruling, issued in absentia by Brazil’s Supreme Court, concludes that the former congressman engaged in actions aimed at obstructing judicial proceedings related to his father’s trial, including efforts to encourage political and economic pressure from U.S. officials.
According to the court, Eduardo Bolsonaro, who has been living in the United States, was involved in lobbying activities targeting U.S. political figures in an attempt to secure sanctions or diplomatic pressure against Brazil. Prosecutors argued that these actions were intended to interfere with ongoing legal cases before Brazil’s highest court.
The Supreme Court found that Bolsonaro had threatened judicial authorities by suggesting that he could obtain punitive measures from the United States if legal proceedings against his father did not conclude favorably. Judges ruled that such conduct represented an unacceptable attempt to influence the independence of Brazil’s judiciary.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed an eight-year ban on holding public office, effectively disqualifying him from future electoral participation for a significant period. The decision may still be appealed.
Eduardo Bolsonaro rejected the ruling, describing it as politically motivated and claiming that the process was intended to remove him from future elections. His allies, including members of his family, have also criticized the judgment, arguing that it reflects judicial overreach.
The case comes amid heightened political tensions in Brazil, where divisions between supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro and the current government remain strong. The legal proceedings against members of the Bolsonaro family have become a focal point of broader debates over judicial independence and political accountability in the country.
Observers note that the controversy also reflects the increasingly international dimension of domestic political disputes, particularly when foreign governments and diplomatic pressure become part of internal legal conflicts.
As appeals remain possible, the final outcome of the case could still evolve, but the ruling marks one of the most significant legal setbacks for a member of the Bolsonaro family in recent years.
