Rubio says no clear path to Ukraine peace talks
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there currently appears to be no clear path toward a negotiated settlement to the war in Ukraine, while stressing that Washington remains willing to contribute to efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
In an interview with Greek newspaper Kathimerini during his visit to Athens, Rubio described the situation as a strategic stalemate and warned that such deadlocks can ultimately be resolved either through negotiations or through further escalation. He said that, for now, prospects for a negotiated agreement remain limited.
Rubio nevertheless emphasized that the United States is prepared to play whatever constructive role it can to help bring the fighting to an end. His comments reflect Washington’s continued focus on finding a possible diplomatic solution despite the lack of visible progress.
The secretary of state also addressed Ukraine’s long-standing aspiration to join NATO, saying that membership is not currently on the agenda. He explained that admitting a new member requires consensus and unanimous agreement among the alliance’s existing members.
NATO has previously described Ukraine’s membership as an irreversible political path, while acknowledging that there is currently no unanimity among the allies on full membership. This leaves the issue politically sensitive as the war continues and Western governments assess their long-term security commitments.
Rubio’s remarks come as the conflict enters another prolonged phase, with Washington seeking to maintain diplomatic options while continuing to assess the security situation in Europe. The United States has repeatedly said that any lasting settlement would need to address the realities of the conflict and reduce the human cost of continued fighting.
For now, however, Rubio’s assessment suggests that a negotiated breakthrough remains difficult to achieve. Washington says it remains ready to support diplomatic efforts, but the lack of movement toward an agreement continues to complicate prospects for ending the war through negotiations.
