A massive Ukrainian drone strike targeted Russia's Kursk region, which borders Ukraine, on Tuesday, resulting in the death of an elderly woman, injuries to nine others, and multiple fires in the region’s administrative center. Russian officials reported that 109 drones were shot down over Kursk overnight, although they did not specify the number of drones launched by Ukraine.

The Kursk region administration confirmed the scale of the attack on Telegram, stating, "Unfortunately, an 85-year-old woman died." The strike severely damaged a multi-story apartment building, causing several flats to catch fire. The building's residents were evacuated to a nearby school. Additional damage was reported at an ambulance garage, where 11 cars were destroyed by drone strikes.

Earlier, on Monday evening, a Ukrainian drone attack claimed the lives of three people in the region, according to Russian authorities. However, these reports remain unverified by independent sources. Ukraine has not provided any immediate comment on the incident.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion over three years ago, has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians, primarily Ukrainian. Both countries deny intentionally targeting civilians, but frequent attacks on civilian infrastructure, including apartment buildings, hospitals, and schools, have become widespread. Ukrainian forces have consistently targeted regions in Russia's border areas, including Kursk, with the aim of weakening Russia's military efforts.

The Kursk region has been the site of numerous incursions, including a cross-border assault by Ukrainian forces last year. While some areas were retaken by Russian forces, Ukrainian troops still control parts of the region. This latest drone strike follows Russia’s missile and bomb attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy, which killed 35 people and injured 119 others over the weekend.

The war continues to escalate with both sides accusing each other of using civilians as shields, and the conflict's toll on civilians grows as attacks on non-military targets persist.
