Colombia purchases swedish gripen fighter jets amid rising tensions with the US
Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Friday that Bogotá will acquire 17 Swedish Gripen fighter jets for approximately $4.3 billion. Speaking from a military base, Petro emphasized that the aircraft are intended to deter attacks against Colombia, stating that threats “could come from anywhere” in today’s unpredictable geopolitical environment.
The contract, initially agreed in principle with Saab in April, reflects Bogotá’s efforts to strengthen its air defense capabilities amid heightened regional tensions. Petro highlighted the importance of these jets in protecting Colombian citizens and deterring aggression from external actors.
The announcement comes amid a strained relationship with Washington. U.S. military operations in the Caribbean have targeted vessels allegedly linked to drug trafficking, resulting in at least 21 ships destroyed and over 80 deaths, raising concerns in Bogotá and Caracas. President Donald Trump has criticized Petro, accusing him of failing to curb cocaine production and imposing economic sanctions, including removing Colombia from Washington’s list of anti-drug allies.
