China hosts Thailand’s king Maha Vajiralongkorn on historic visit
BEIJING — Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Friday welcomed Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida, marking the first visit by a Thai monarch since bilateral ties between the two countries were established 50 years ago.
The visit, lasting five days until November 17, was portrayed by Chinese media as a symbol of friendly coexistence and a demonstration of China’s reliability as an economic and diplomatic partner.
During the visit, the Thai monarchs met with Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The event included a ceremonial review of the honour guard, highlighting the historic significance of the visit.
Chinese media emphasized that the visits of foreign royals, including Spain’s King Felipe VI earlier this week, underscore Beijing’s role as a benevolent neighbour and trusted global partner, contrasting with economic tensions triggered by U.S. policies.
The visit is expected to strengthen diplomatic relations and explore further economic and cultural cooperation between China and Thailand.
