Celiac disease in Morocco remains widely undiagnosed and untreated
Celiac disease is emerging as a major public health issue in Morocco, where an estimated 600,000 people may be affected without knowing it. The condition, an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten consumption, damages the small intestine and can lead to serious complications, including an increased risk of intestinal cancer when left untreated. Despite its severity, the disease remains largely unrecognized within the national healthcare system, with many patients undiagnosed and unsupported.
The diagnostic gap is driven by several structural weaknesses. Symptoms often overlap with common digestive disorders, making identification difficult at the primary care level. General practitioners receive limited training on the condition, while diagnostic tests remain expensive and inaccessible for many households. In countries without structured screening protocols, patients can spend between six and ten years seeking answers before receiving a confirmed diagnosis. This prolonged delay allows the disease to progress unchecked, increasing long-term health risks.
Treatment relies entirely on a strict gluten-free diet, which presents a major financial burden. Gluten-free products are significantly more expensive than standard alternatives. A kilogram of gluten-free flour can cost around 70 dirhams, compared to 7 dirhams for regular flour. This tenfold price difference places sustained dietary treatment out of reach for a large segment of the population. For many families, adopting the required diet can increase monthly food expenses by up to 50 percent. There is no reimbursement system, no subsidy mechanism, and no national support program to offset these costs.
The absence of institutional recognition has left celiac disease outside national health priorities. There is no coordinated screening strategy, limited public awareness, and weak engagement from the food industry. This situation is particularly striking in a country where wheat consumption ranks among the highest globally. The lack of structured intervention continues to expose patients to preventable complications while reinforcing inequalities in access to care.
A shift is now underway, driven by civil society organizations, healthcare professionals, and affected families. Advocacy efforts have intensified across the country, calling for formal recognition of the disease as a serious chronic condition. A key development is the introduction of a certified gluten-free label, managed by national standardization authorities and adopted by a growing number of manufacturers. This initiative aims to improve product safety and consumer trust, although broader industry participation remains necessary for meaningful impact.
International models provide a reference point for reform. In Italy, celiac disease is fully integrated into public health policy, with reimbursed diagnostic tests, subsidized dietary products, and structured medical training. Moroccan stakeholders have begun engaging with experienced international partners to adapt similar frameworks. A significant policy announcement is expected in May 2026, signaling potential progress toward institutional recognition and improved patient support.
The growing mobilization reflects a broader shift in how chronic conditions are addressed in Morocco. The challenge now lies in translating awareness into concrete policy measures. Without rapid action, thousands of patients will continue to face delayed diagnosis, financial strain, and avoidable health complications.
