Tanger Med strengthens its position on the Asia-Red Sea-Europe shipping route
Tanger Med is strengthening its role in international maritime trade after being added to the updated route of the AE19 service operated by Gemini Cooperation, the shipping alliance between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.
The revised service connects the Saudi port of Jeddah with several major Asian ports, particularly in China, South Korea and Malaysia. Vessels then transit the Suez Canal and call at Port Said in Egypt before heading toward Tanger Med and continuing to Singapore.
The inclusion of the Moroccan port highlights its growing importance as a strategic maritime hub connecting Asian and European markets. Located near the Strait of Gibraltar and at the intersection of major Mediterranean shipping routes, Tanger Med offers carriers an important gateway between global commercial centres.
The route adjustment is also expected to improve the operational efficiency of the AE19 service. The full rotation has reportedly been shortened from 16 weeks to 14 weeks, potentially allowing shipping companies to manage cargo flows more efficiently and provide more competitive transit options.
The service is expected to continue operating on a weekly basis, offering greater regularity for international traders and logistics operators. More frequent and predictable connections can help companies plan shipments and manage supply chains across long-distance maritime routes.
For Tanger Med, the development further reinforces its position within global shipping networks. The port has benefited from significant investment in maritime infrastructure, logistics facilities and connectivity with international markets, allowing it to attract major shipping lines and increasingly diversified services.
Its geographical position gives the Moroccan port a particular advantage in trade between Asia, the Middle East and Europe. The ability to connect major Asian production centres with European markets through a single maritime network strengthens Morocco’s role in international logistics.
The expansion of services linking Tanger Med to major global routes also comes as competition among international ports continues to intensify. Ports are increasingly seeking to improve connectivity, reduce transit times and provide reliable logistics solutions to attract shipping companies and cargo operators.
The integration of Tanger Med into the updated AE19 route therefore represents another step in the port’s development as a major intercontinental logistics platform. It could also contribute to strengthening Morocco’s position within global supply chains and increasing the country’s attractiveness as a strategic logistics and trade hub.
