Canada delivers critical aid to Gaza amid plans to recognize Palestinian state

Canada has airdropped over 21,600 pounds of humanitarian aid to Gaza as part of an urgent response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in the territory. The operation, carried out by the Canadian Armed Forces using a CC-130J Hercules aircraft, underscores the country’s growing involvement in addressing Gaza’s dire needs.

The aid delivery comes ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney's announcement at the United Nations next month, where Canada is expected to formally recognize Palestinian statehood. This decision aligns Canada with other nations, including France and Britain, in supporting Palestinian sovereignty.

Escalating tensions over aid restrictions

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Defense Minister David McGuinty have criticized Israel for obstructing humanitarian efforts, calling the restrictions a violation of international law. In a joint statement, the ministers emphasized the critical role of humanitarian assistance, noting that land-based deliveries have been severely hampered.

“Despite the scale of need, humanitarian partners face severe challenges in delivering life-saving food and medical assistance by land due to ongoing restrictions imposed by the Israeli government,” the statement read.

Coordinated efforts and regional diplomacy

The humanitarian mission was facilitated through Jordan, which played a pivotal role in enabling the airdrop. Canada expressed gratitude to Jordan for its support, highlighting the challenges posed by restricted ground access to Gaza.

This operation follows Canada’s broader commitment to Palestinian humanitarian needs. Last week, Minister Anand announced $30 million in aid for Gaza and the West Bank, alongside $10 million to bolster the Palestinian Authority’s governance. These funds will support logistics via the Jordanian Corridor and streamline aid delivery through partners like the United Nations and the Red Cross.

Since October 2023, Canada has allocated over $355 million in international assistance for Palestinian civilians, including significant funding in 2024 and 2025.

A push for peace

Prime Minister Carney has described the situation in Gaza as catastrophic, condemning Israeli policies in the region. He has reaffirmed Canada’s support for a two-state solution, emphasizing it as the only viable path to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Canadian Armed Forces remain prepared to undertake additional humanitarian missions as needed, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the crisis and promoting regional stability.
