Airstrike on hospital in Western Myanmar leaves dozens dead

A humanitarian worker in western Myanmar has reported that an airstrike carried out by the ruling military forces has resulted in at least 31 deaths at a public hospital in the town of Mrauk U, located in Rakhine State near the Bangladesh border. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening as fighting continues to intensify across the country.

According to local responders, many more people were injured, and the number of victims could rise as rescue efforts continue. The worker described the situation as “extremely alarming,” noting that medical staff and civilians were among those affected. The military authorities have not issued an immediate statement regarding the strike.

Since taking control in a 2021 coup that ended a decade of limited democratic progress, the Myanmar military has increasingly relied on air operations during clashes with armed opposition groups. Observers of the conflict have noted a steady escalation in these tactics over recent years.

The military government has announced that national elections will begin on December 28, presenting them as a pathway toward political stability. However, resistance groups have vowed to block voting in territories under their control, raising concerns about renewed violence as the election period approaches.
