Benin: 27 dead after bus plunges into Ouémé river

At least 27 people lost their lives after a tragic road accident in Benin, when a passenger bus fell into the Ouémé River during the night from Saturday to Sunday, according to civil protection services.

An earlier report from the Beninese Ministry of the Interior mentioned one confirmed death and 44 missing persons. Rescue operations later recovered 23 bodies from inside the bus after it was lifted from the river, while three more were discovered during patrols along the riverbanks. One additional victim had already been retrieved on Sunday.

According to Interior Minister Alassane Seidou, the bus, which was traveling from Lomé to Niamey with 52 passengers on board, crashed into the guardrail of the Ouémé River bridge before plunging into the water.

The accident occurred on the Inter-State National Road No. 2, which runs through Benin from Cotonou in the south to Malanville, a town on the border with Niger in the north.
