Belgian federal deputy Mathieu Michel confirms salary diverted in fraud case
Belgian federal deputy Mathieu Michel revealed that his salary had been fraudulently diverted, confirming the incident in remarks published by Sudinfo on Thursday. The lawmaker, who is affiliated with the Reformist Movement (MR), said he became aware of the situation after noticing irregularities in his payments.
According to initial reports, the misappropriation appears to be the result of an administrative or cyber-related fraud rather than an internal political issue. The case has been referred to the relevant financial and judicial authorities, who are now investigating how the funds were redirected and whether the deputy’s personal or professional accounts were compromised.
Michel assured that corrective steps have already been taken to recover the diverted payments and strengthen security procedures. He also emphasized his full cooperation with the ongoing inquiry, describing the matter as “a regrettable but isolated incident.”
The revelation highlights growing concerns in Belgium about digital vulnerabilities within public administration and underscores the need for stricter cybersecurity safeguards in managing officials’ personal and governmental accounts.
