Android dominates Arab smartphone markets amid economic divides

Recent data highlights Android's continued dominance over iPhone in smartphone markets across Arab countries, with notable variations between nations. In conflict-affected areas, Android's market share exceeds 90 percent, while affluent Gulf states exhibit stronger iPhone adoption. This divergence underscores the influence of economic conditions and consumer preferences on device choices.

Bahrain emerges as an outlier in the region, with iPhone capturing approximately 46 percent of the market, approaching parity with Android. Kuwait follows with a 32 percent share, while Lebanon, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia see iPhone adoption ranging from 23 to 27 percent. Recent figures place Saudi Arabia's iOS market share at 23.7 percent, just below Morocco's 24.7 percent share.

In contrast, Android enjoys overwhelming dominance in economically constrained nations. Syria and Yemen report Android usage at 96 percent, while Palestine and Sudan surpass 97 percent. In these regions, budget-friendly devices from brands like Xiaomi and Samsung prevail due to affordability.

Across the broader Middle East, Android maintains a stronghold, with 77 percent market share in Qatar, 82 percent in the UAE, and 76 percent in Saudi Arabia. The Gulf nations boast smartphone penetration rates above 90 percent, contributing to a surge in shipments, which reached 58.7 million units in 2024.

This regional divide reflects the affordability of Android devices in lower-income economies versus the premium appeal of iPhones in wealthier markets. Among younger consumers, iPhone adoption has risen by 18 percent regionally, signaling its growing appeal despite economic disparities.
