Hormuz Strait: Donald Trump Announces Complete Mine Clearance and Warns Iran

The Hormuz Strait remains at the center of geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump stated that the mine clearance operations conducted in this strategic waterway are now complete, while issuing a stern warning to Tehran against any further attempts to obstruct navigation.

In a message posted on Truth Social, Donald Trump indicated that he had received information from the U.S. Navy confirming the removal or destruction of all mines present in the international waters of the strait.

The American president also warned that any vessel engaged in laying new mines in this area would be targeted and destroyed. Washington further claims to maintain heightened surveillance of maritime passage, including the use of capabilities from the U.S. Space Force.

A Strategic Waterway Under Close Surveillance

Located between Iran and Oman, the Hormuz Strait is one of the main transit points for global energy trade. A significant portion of international hydrocarbon exports typically passes through this area, making its security a major concern for global markets and the stability of energy supply.

Any prolonged disruption of navigation in this corridor can have direct consequences on maritime transport, energy prices, and international economic balances.

The American announcement comes in the context of ongoing tensions surrounding freedom of navigation in the strait.

Oman and Iran Seek a Gradual Solution

Alongside American initiatives, Oman continues its discussions with Iran to establish a sustainable navigation security mechanism.

The Omani Foreign Minister met on Tuesday in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart to discuss a gradual approach. The exchanges notably focus on the establishment of a temporary maritime corridor as well as a potential joint mechanism dedicated to mine clearance.

Technical discussions are expected to continue with the aim of developing a permanent solution to ensure the security of maritime traffic in this strategic area.

Positions Still Divergent

Despite the announcements regarding mine clearance, the political dispute between Washington and Tehran remains intact. Iran maintains that the situation in the strait is linked to the United States' adherence to the commitments outlined in the memorandum of understanding concluded on June 17, particularly regarding the blockade of Iranian ports.

For its part, Washington announced in June a mission aimed at facilitating the movement of vessels, especially oil tankers, through the strait via a protective escort and support mechanism.

The situation now illustrates the coexistence of various diplomatic and security initiatives. While the United States expresses its intention to maintain freedom of navigation, Oman attempts to foster a negotiated solution with Iran, the future of the Hormuz Strait remains closely dependent on the evolution of discussions between the different parties.
