Miscarriage: Maternal Age at the Heart of Key Risk Factors

Miscarriages remain a common phenomenon, yet they are still not fully understood in all their medical and social dimensions. A study published by the National Institute for Demographic Studies (Ined) highlights the central role of women's age in the likelihood of spontaneous pregnancy loss, while also pointing out the limitations of the care provided to patients.

According to this analysis based on several surveys and data from the National Health Data System, between 10% and 14% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Most of these interruptions occur during the first trimester, while a small portion occurs after 14 weeks of amenorrhea.

A Risk That Evolves with Age

The study identifies age as the factor most strongly associated with the frequency of miscarriages. However, the risk follows a non-linear evolution.

For women under 20, the probability exceeds 10%. It then decreases before starting to rise again from the mid-thirties.

At 35 years old, approximately 8% of pregnancies would end in miscarriage, according to the analyzed data. This proportion then increases with age, reaching 14% for women at 40 and 23% for those aged 45.

In contrast, the level of education and financial situation seem to have a much more limited influence on the observed frequency of miscarriages.

A Often Difficult Experience in the Care Pathway

Beyond statistical data, the study also focuses on the experiences of women facing an early pregnancy loss.

Care in gynecological emergency services can be perceived as poorly adapted to the needs of patients. Some express regret over the lack of information about care and its various stages, as well as the absence of medical follow-up after the event.

The hospital environment itself can also be challenging when affected patients are welcomed in spaces where pregnant women or those in labor are also present.

These observations fuel reflection on the evolution of practices and the necessity for support that is more adapted to the physical and psychological dimensions of miscarriage.

Towards an Evolution in Support

The study comes in a context of gradual change in the recognition of this situation within women's professional and medical journeys.

Since September 2024, in France, employees facing a miscarriage can benefit from paid sick leave without a waiting period.

New recommendations are also expected to improve patient support. For the authors of the study, the issue goes beyond mere medical care and raises questions about better information, enhanced follow-up, and a more adapted organization of care for this ordeal.
