Aftershock Alert: Al Haouz Earthquake Victims Urged to Register by January Deadline

Nearly one month after a devastating 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook Morocco's Al Haouz province, victims now face a crucial deadline to formally account for their losses. The Moroccan Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday that the registry recording earthquake victims will remain open through January 16th, 2024.

The registration process falls under Morocco's Catastrophic Events Coverage System law, which was enacted after Al Haouz was declared an official disaster zone last month. Individuals and municipalities across the hardest-hit areas can sign up either online or in person. Once registered, victims will receive a time-stamped receipt to acknowledge their application.

Authorities aim to provide relief for those impacted by collapsed buildings and homes during the October quake. The registry represents the initial step toward securing state resources for Al Haouz residents as they rebuild their lives. With aftershocks continuing to strike the region, Moroccans face a long road to recovery. Officials strongly urge prompt registration by the mid-January deadline for those seeking post-earthquake aid.
