Philippine Political Rift Deepens: Vice President’s Startling Assassination Threat Raises Security Concerns

Philippine Political Rift Deepens: Vice President’s Startling Assassination Threat Raises Security Concerns

The Philippine political landscape has been shaken by a controversial statement from Vice President Sara Duterte, who openly declared that she had arranged for the assassination of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the event of her own death. This dramatic declaration underscores the growing rift between the nation’s two most prominent political families and has prompted swift security measures from the president’s office.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Duterte revealed she had instructed an assassin to target not only Marcos but also First Lady Liza Araneta and Speaker of the House Martin Romualdez if she were to be killed. “I have talked to a person. I said, if I get killed, go kill BBM [Marcos], [first lady] Liza Araneta, and [speaker] Martin Romualdez. No joke. No joke,” Duterte stated, punctuating her remarks with profanities. She emphasized that the assassin had agreed to her directive.

This extraordinary announcement came in response to an online commenter advising Duterte to stay safe during her overnight visit to Congress. While Duterte did not reference any specific threats against her, her remarks have prompted widespread alarm.

Immediate Government Response

The presidential communications office released a statement acknowledging the gravity of Duterte’s words, referring the matter to the presidential security command for “immediate proper action.” “Any threat to the life of the president must always be taken seriously, more so that this threat has been publicly revealed in clear and certain terms,” the statement read.

Duterte’s office has yet to comment on the response from Marcos’s administration.

A Collapsing Alliance

This public feud marks a significant rupture in the alliance that helped both Duterte and Marcos secure a decisive electoral victory in 2022. Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, resigned from the cabinet in June, a move that signaled the disintegration of their once-formidable political partnership.

Since her resignation, Duterte has not held back in her criticism of Marcos, recently accusing him of incompetence and labeling him a liar. She also expressed discontent with Speaker Romualdez, a cousin of Marcos, whose decision to slash the vice-presidential budget by nearly two-thirds has added fuel to the fire.

Historical and Political Context

The current tension mirrors a long history of political violence and power struggles in the Philippines. The country has seen high-profile assassinations in the past, including the killing of opposition leader Benigno Aquino in 1983 under the rule of Marcos Sr., the late authoritarian president and namesake of the current leader.

This escalating feud also highlights differing stances on key issues, including foreign policy and Duterte’s father’s controversial war on drugs. While the vice-presidency in the Philippines is largely ceremonial and elected separately from the presidency, Duterte’s role has been anything but subdued.

Mid-Term Elections Loom

The unfolding drama comes as the Philippines gears up for mid-term elections in May 2025. These elections are widely seen as a referendum on Marcos’s leadership and an opportunity for him to solidify power ahead of his six-year term’s conclusion in 2028.

Observers worry that this political infighting could undermine governance and stability in the country. For now, the focus remains on addressing the potential security threat posed by Duterte’s shocking allegations.

As the nation watches this feud unfold, it raises questions about the future of Philippine politics and the enduring rivalry between its most influential families.
