United States tightens economic pressure on Iran, says Trump administration official
The United States has significantly increased economic pressure on Iran as part of a broader strategy combining financial sanctions and maritime restrictions, according to statements from senior officials in the Trump administration.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington is implementing what he described as a coordinated economic blockade aimed at limiting Iran’s financial capacity amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
“Economic pressure campaign” and maritime restrictions
According to the administration, the strategy—referred to as “Economic Fury”—complements earlier military actions taken in coordination with regional allies. Officials claim the objective is to restrict Iran’s access to international financial networks and limit its ability to fund state institutions.
Bessent also indicated that maritime enforcement plays a key role in the policy, with naval forces monitoring and restricting vessel movements linked to Iranian trade routes. US military sources have reported that dozens of ships have been affected by these measures.
Impact on Iran’s economy
US officials argue that the sanctions and restrictions are placing significant strain on Iran’s economy, reducing state revenues and limiting access to foreign currency. They claim that financial pressure is affecting government spending and broader economic stability.
Some American officials have also described rising inflation and worsening economic conditions in Iran, warning of further deterioration if restrictions continue.
Control of financial assets and long-term strategy
Washington has also stated that it is tracking financial assets linked to Iranian institutions abroad, particularly those connected to sanctioned organizations. Authorities say these assets could be used in the future for reconstruction or humanitarian purposes depending on political developments.
The US government maintains that its actions are aimed at altering Tehran’s regional behavior while increasing pressure on its economic system.
