Free party halted in southern France as dozens detained

A large unauthorized music gathering was brought to an end by authorities in southern France after drawing around 150 participants. The event took place in the commune of Trigance, located within the scenic Verdon Natural Park, an area known for its environmental significance and tourism appeal.

According to local officials, law enforcement intervened overnight after identifying the illegal event. Approximately 150 individuals and around 50 vehicles were present at the site. Authorities had previously issued a regional ban on undeclared music gatherings, prompting a coordinated response to enforce the regulation.

By midday, the sound system had been shut down and dozens of fines were issued, mainly for parking and traffic violations. Officials also confirmed that one individual was taken into custody on suspicion of drug-related offenses. Around 25 gendarmes were deployed to manage the operation and restore order.

This incident is part of a broader pattern in the region. In recent weeks, similar gatherings have been dismantled by authorities, often resulting in fines and arrests. While many such events occur without major incidents, they are frequently associated with concerns over noise pollution, environmental damage, and substance abuse.

Free parties, which emerged in France during the 1990s, are typically organized in remote or abandoned locations. Despite their cultural appeal to some, they continue to raise public safety and legal concerns. Lawmakers have recently moved toward stricter regulations, with proposed legislation aiming to impose harsher penalties on organizers of illegal events, including significant fines and potential prison sentences.

The proposed legal framework is still under review and must pass through additional legislative stages before being fully enacted.
