Unidentified drone suspected of airspace violation near finnish-Russian border
An unidentified drone is suspected of having entered Finnish airspace near the country’s eastern border with Russia, according to Finland’s Ministry of Defence. The incident was reported on Sunday and is currently under investigation by the Finnish Border Guard.
The Finnish Air Force detected the drone early in the morning near the town of Virolahti, a strategic area close to the 1,340-kilometre border shared with Russia. Authorities stated that the model and origin of the drone remain unknown, and it had already left Finnish airspace when it was tracked.
Officials have not confirmed whether the incident was accidental or intentional, but the case has raised renewed concerns about airspace security in a region marked by heightened military sensitivity.
The Finnish Border Guard has launched a formal inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the flight. Finland has recently increased surveillance along its eastern border due to regional security tensions linked to the war in Ukraine.
The incident comes amid broader drone activity reported in neighboring regions. Russian defense authorities stated that hundreds of Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight across several areas, including zones near Saint Petersburg, located relatively close to the Finnish border.
Similar incidents have previously raised concerns in Finland. Earlier this year, Ukraine issued an apology after two of its drones reportedly crashed in southern Finland, allegedly due to navigation interference.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as Finland strengthens its airspace protection and border security systems.
